Held in late September, the Seward Music and Arts Festival is a great place to meet locals and experience a true Alaskan community arts event. There are local craftspeople, local bands and people from all over the State...all celebrating the end of the busy tourist season.

The Seward Museum is a straight-forward museum - all history and no frills. But I really enjoyed seeing the many artifacts from Seward's history - it really gave me an overview and an appreciation of the area I was visiting.

The Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward is primarily a rehabilitation facility for marine animals. However they also have a wicked aquarium that introduces visitors from all over to the sea life of Alaska.

RVs are one of the most popular ways to explore Alaska. The prevalence of top-notch camping sites makes it that much more appealing...

Hotel Seward is the oldest hotel in town. If historic rooms are not your thing, the renovated rooms are well-appointed with fireplaces and plasma televisions!

Alaska is a subsistence culture, so I joined Alaska Lonely Planet writer Catherine Bodry on her quest to pick more blueberries for the winter.

This is by far the coolest, tastiest and most memorable place I ate in Alaska. Steve Miller at the Smoke Shack makes everything from scratch - from the sauces to the ketchup, he makes everything fresh by hand. And the down-home country menu has so many delicious creative twists that I would go all the way back to Alaska to eat here...

Seward, Alaska, is a cute little town that actually offers a lot of entertainment for its small size. One of the most unique features of the town is its recent title of "Mural Capital of Alaska." Public art takes the front seat here - and what a show it is!

The Moby Dick Hostel is the only budget option in Seward, located on 3rd Avenue right near the main "downtown" strip. It was a fun place to see, and makes a great base to explore the natural wonders of the area.

I love to travel during the shoulder season: less tourists and more quality interactions with locals. However, the shoulder season in Alaska means less wildlife...so with low expectations I caught Major Marine Tours' last cruise of the season, a wildlife cruise around Resurrection Bay.

Experience what is like to be on a sled being pulled by 16 Alaskan huskies. These sled dogs are something else, and it is wicked fun to experience an Alaskan tradition - even if it is sunny outside!

The Yukon Bar made me feel like I had finally arrived in Alaska - booze, music and locals. What more could a traveler need?

Hiking the Exit Glacier, Alaska's most visited glacier, is an easy insight into Alaska's vast wilderness.
