In Part 2 we buy Turkish carpets and take the scariest taxi ride of our lives. We visit the famous Pera Palas Hotel, and then visit the city by night. Then, we saw the strangest thing, a 9 year old smoking a water pipe and drinking coffee?well, IT IS a different culture. We then went to a bar and enjoyed a Turkish football game with the locals. We ended the evening with a very fun trip at the Bazaar. The next day we went to the Mevlevi Monastery where we saw the ceremony of the ?Whirling Dervishes?. Interesting, and dizzying to say the least.

This video follows Patrick Treacy on a visit to the Grand Bazaar (Kapalı?arşı ("Covered Bazaar"))and the Spice Bazaar, ('Mısır ?arşısı', Egyptian Bazaar) located in Emin?n? in Istanbul. The background music is intentionally Egyptian in respect of this bazaar. Some say it got the name because the spices used to be imported from Egypt. Others that, in the Byzantine period, the site of the Spice Bazaar was the centre of corn trade and the word mısır has a double meaning in Turkish: "Egypt" and "corn". The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest covered markets in the world with 58 streets, 4,000 shops, serving between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. The bazaar was constructed in 1455 by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. It was enlarged in 1566 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. In 1894, it was restored after an earthquake.

t's Istanbul, Not Constantinople, (Thanks, They Might Be Giants!) and the highlight video from my last trip to Istanbul. Mostly taken from the European side of the Bosphorous, it features a few shots of the famous Haggia Sophia Mosque and a boat ride to the Princess Islands.

Topkapi Palace is the most popular attraction in the city, so you should put it on top of your list and get here early, before 9:00 a.m., to beat the crowds and long lines. The palace originally had 5,000 residents, functioning as an opulent, self-contained city divided in various sections. It was home to the royal Sultan and the empire's center of government for four hundred years; it also housed the judiciary, Harem and the Palace School.
