British comedian Paul Merton presented a popular travel documentary in the UK about his trip to China. This segment focuses on Shanghai and it shows a Western audience whose mind is still occupied with image associations with the "old China" how incredibly fast the country has changed itself within the last two decades --- in his uniquely funny way.

A Friday evening on Huang Hua Road. Local color and culture. I also decide to do a very standard Friday night activity: get a Shanghainese haircut.

This was my favourite place in Shanghai!! The Old Town - YuYuan. New Year (therefore the fire crackers) ended while we were there, and as a tradition they turn on all of the lanterns on the last day (that's why it was so crowded). It looked so awesome!

Shanghai's Yuyuan Bazaar is best known as a marketplace for all the souvenirs and tsotchkes you could want. It is also a haven for street food: soup dumplings, sweets, even birds-on-a-stick. Weekends are especially crowded, when even neighborhood grannies and little kids jostle with tourists to be next in line.

Short video clip from a farmer's market in Shanghai. The great thing about Shanghai is that tucked away between the high rises are old neighborhoods. I had an hour between meetings and thought I'd take a short walk. I never expected to run into this great little market. In the video clip you'll notice how the farmer's use the bicycles as mobile storefronts and how they've modified the bikes with local materials for their own needs.
