Santorini (Greek Σαντορίνη), is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km south-east from Greece's mainland. It is also known as Thera (or Thira, Greek Θήρα), forming the southernmost member of the Cyclades islands. Dr. Patrick Treacy has being coming here since 1982. The accompanying music is Zorbas ("Zorba's dance") is by Mikis Theodorakis. This song appeared in the film Zorba the Greek, for which Theodorakis wrote the soundtrack, and became internationally famous and popular. It is now commonly played and danced to in Greek tavernas in Greece and worldwide and exists as a kind of music trademark of Greece.

We went with a recommendation for our first meal in Fira and had lunch at Ouzeri, a restaurant with authentic traditional Greek dishes. The mousaka was incredible.

Where to Eat by Kamari Beach: Hook Bar (01:00)

We chose Hook Bar out of the many beach-side dining options by Kamari Beach (the Black Beach) because of its daily fish special. We ordered a ton of food to go with the fish (tsatsiki, saganaki, pasticio, fried tomatoes, calamari), thinking we were only getting one small fish. Imagine our surprise when the fish turned out to be family of 7 or 8 fishes! It was a feast.

Where to Eat in Santorini: 1800 (00:58)

After our 2 hour hike between Fira and Oia, we decided to treat ourselves to a fine meal at 1800, the restaurant located in an old captain's house. It was by far our favorite meal during the entire trip. Every dish was creative in presentation and taste. Highly recommended!

Where to Stay in Santorini: Uranos Houses (01:19)

We stayed two nights at Uranos Houses in Imerovigli, a town about a 15-20 minute walk from Fira. We were upgraded to a suite, which was a nice surprise; our cave could easily have slept 5 people. The view was definitely the best part of the hotel - we really enjoyed just sitting on our private balcony on our last morning, eating, reading, and taking in the magnificent caldera before we had to leave.

Santorini Sunset Hike - Fira to Ia (01:53)

We decided to try the 6 mile hike between Fira and Ia, the two main towns on Santorini. The hike took about 2 hours to complete and offered magnificent views of the island from all angles along the caldera. We were surprised there weren't many other people on the hike - parts of the path are very undeveloped and rocky, but the views definitely made any harder parts worth it. We saw the famous Ia sunset from the kastro (fortress) with the other tourists who had spots staked out and cameras ready. The kastro is probably the best place on the island to watch the sunset, since it offers both a full view of the caldera and the very picturesque whitewashed houses, stacked against the tip of Ia. It was incredible!

Taking the Ferry from Santorini to Athens (01:47)

We took a Blue Star ferry from Athens to Santorini. The Athens ferry port is called "Piraeus." Here are some sights and sounds from the ride...and the amazing view of Santorini that greets travelers arriving by Ferry.
