What to Watch: February 18th-24th02/18/2008 12:02, by TF_Tony in Tripfilms Blog |
As any traveler can attest, trips are invariably rife with roadblocks, setbacks, and unexpected changes of plan. And as any seasoned traveler will counter, it’s all part of the journey.
This week, it’s all about those little obstacles that unveil a new window into a culture—or, sometimes, just give you a funny story to tell when you get home. In Russia, Kurt Savage undertakes a time-honored tradition: a 100km snowkiting race across Lake Imandra using only, you guessed it, wind power. The extreme sports enthusiasts set off with a healthy sense of humor, only to find the elements somewhat uncooperative.
On a much more mainstream bus trip from La Paz to Copacabana, Lauren Saffa finds herself privy to a particularly Bolivian phenomenon: the Bolivian roadblock. In protest of newly imposed road tolls, drivers obstruct traffic with whatever they can find until a compromise is reached—and the deal is sealed in an admirably scrappy way.
And in Berlin, Alexei Kaleina stops to learn more about famous historical roadblock Checkpoint Charlie from the chairwoman of the board of the museum that has been constructed in its place to honor German history. Roadblock or memorable experience? It’s all in the eye (and the viewfinder) of the beholder.
