What to Watch: March 3rd-9th03/04/2008 00:03, by TF_Tony in Tripfilms Blog |
With only two videos, new Tripfilms contributor Finbar Cahill has made quite a splash. His frenzied ode to Barcelona’s Montjuic, in which we follow host Xabi Van Der Floooze up the famous hill to explore what’s in store for us at the top, is nothing if not entertaining. We learn about public transportation, Barcelona landmarks, and the artistic oddities of Montjuic’s park, all from an insanely energetic local who wins the prize for Creepiest Microphone Ever. No wonder this video has hung out in the Top 25 on Tripfilms for the past two weeks.
Carrying the spontaneous spirit further, the Irishman-turned-Spaniard’s second video centers on a spur-of-the-moment trip to Hellin, Spain, to take part in the annual Las Tamboradas festival. There are drums, drinks swilled out of what appear to be giant gourds, and a trek to the top of a hill to recreate Jesus’ carrying of the cross—in other words, all the makings of a great party. And when it comes to incorporating a little history lesson into the mix, this filmmaker and his friend and host, Ishah, know exactly what to do: shut up and listen to the locals. We’re glad they did: we learned a bit about Spanish history and gained validation our mediocre drum skills—they could come in handy in the face of danger.
We also want to say welcome home to filmmaker Stefanie Taschereau who recently traveled to Burkina Faso and shares with us some memorable and informative videos, including a portrait of a chaotic and charming capital city of Ouagadougou. (Watch the video to get the proper pronunciation!)
