What to Watch April 21-25: Extreme Films

This week, we salute those filmmakers who take their travels to the extreme. You’ve probably seen the bespectacled Matteus Frankovich in the Member Spotlight on the Tripfilms homepage; if you were wondering how he earned the honor, take a look at Polar Dip. In a personal celebration the first snow in his native Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, he bravely plunges into the frigid waters of Elkhorn Lake—and documents the teeth-chattering experience for those less intrepid.

In another physical challenge, new filmmaker Juxtapose doesn’t let a pesky little thing like a time limit get in the way of providing a sweeping overview of Berlin’s landmarks. In Run Berlin Run, she evokes the popular film Run Lola Run by hoofing it through a three-minute tour of the city. The mark of success? It leaves us wanting more.

And in an ode to Boston’s biking culture (that’s cycling, not motorbiking), You Tube-r littlebigman909_YT brings us the nerve-wracking, fast-motion Boston’s Deadliest Bike Messenger, in which he speeds through Boston’s streets with a camera on his bike helmet. With its sharp turns, skillful car-dodges, and narrow dashes through lines of city buses, the film feels like a ride at an amusement park; we can even forgive the melodramatic ‘80s rock soundtrack. (Who are we kidding—we loved it.)
