Double Take: Films That Made Us Trip06/09/2008 23:06, by MoDean in Tripfilms Blog |
We love all our filmmakers—really. We beam with pride when they send us a fantastic new video; we champion their accomplishments; we tell them to invite their friends to join in the fun. But, as any parent would understand, there are times when they crack us up, and there are times when they make us scratch our heads.
Take the recent Tripfilms hit Touring the Vancouver Night Market. We love the local’s perspective on one of the largest Chinatowns in North America, and we love host jedicarson_YT’s engaging energy, but why, oh why, won’t he take off his headphones?
Then there’s our fabulous filmmaker Basil Khalil, whose recent Three Minute Tour of Glasgow had us in stitches trying to understand the host’s probably-really-excellent tour of his native city. Don’t get us wrong: we love that bona fide Scottish accent, and we’re all for getting a local’s take, but our untrained ears couldn’t keep up.
Finally, we turn to the fascinating film A Visit to the Traditional Herbalist in Cape Town by GlobalNomadsGroup_YT. It’s a truly intriguing glimpse into native South African culture, but we can’t help but wince a little when its video-camera-toting American host (who’s visiting a poor township outside Cape Town) requests an herbal concoction to help him make more money. We suggest opting for something a little more feel-good (say, “world peace” or “happiness”) next time.
