At Tripfilms, we celebrate the weird—and there hasn’t been a weirder video to cross our paths than Straw Men in Evolene by filmmaker Swiss Tourism. In a village in Herens Valley of Switzerland, we’re given an inside look at a fascinating carnival tradition in which men in the village are dressed in burlap sacks stuffed with straw, then anointed with some very creepy masks, after which they simply wander around the village, scaring women and children. Despite their menacing presence, however, the men inside admit that it gets pretty hot and uncomfortable inside the 28-kilo costumes: as one participant tells us, there’s “an enormous sense of pleasure” in taking it off. At once a disturbing flashback to the Dorothy-meets-the-Scarecrow scene in The Wizard of Oz and a fascinating glimpse into rural culture, the Straw Men in Evolene is a film you have to see to believe.
