8 Local Beach Excursions To Prolong Summer08/30/2008 12:08, by Kelley in Tripfilms Blog |
Just because Labor Day is around the corner, it doesn't mean you can't still go to the beach! There's plenty of sunshine left, so take advantage of this Indian summer and hit some local sand.
8 Beach Excursions in and around the USA
Martha's Vineyard is just a 40 minute ferry from Harwich on Cape Cod, and a couple hour drive Boston. The Vineyard is a great weekend or even an ambitious day excursion. The ferry itself is a peaceful and scenic trip -- you can take your car or just walk on and enjoy the view. MV has great seafood, quaint towns and plenty of sand.
For the New Yorkers, Brighton Beach is just a metro card swipe away. At the end of the Q, the vibrant Russian neighborhood in Brighton will make you feel a lot further from the big city than just another burrough. Restaurants line the boardwalk, and as Jane Guyer explains, it's great to see "big sky and big ocean" for a change from the big city.
Miami Beach: The beach really get come much closer than it does in Miami and it's presence is always felt even if you can't see it. Beach dress is common on the sidewalks and just about everyone in the city shares the same love of sun and surf. Grab an outdoor table with a view and a tropical drink and you'll forget that there is such a thing as winter.
It gets hot down south and the Texans know that a great place to cool off is at Port Aransas beach. With the serious gulf waves, take a skim board or a surf board to play in the warm waters.
Our own StrayCompass knew that a great time to take a trip to Cabo San Lucas would be in August, the off season in many beach destinations. Los Cabos has the steamy Lover's Beach with it's secluded and natural beauty that will certainly not dissapoint.
The vibrant Venice Beach in Orange County has more than just sand and sea. Great for walking the boardwalks, watching the body builders and performers, grabbing some classic boardwalk grub, Venice Beach is a fun day excursion for anyone and everyone.
Obviously, California has no shortage of beautiful beaches. If you are based in San Francisco or feel like a drive to the northern part of the state, hit up San Fran's North Beach and after you can stroll along the scenic port.
For those of you that are more landlocked at this time of year, remember the beach doesn't just mean ocean. Some of the US's best beaches are on lakes. Chicago has a great beach scene and does upstate New York--one of which is Canandaigua that has some great sailboarding.
