Avignon is a great hub for visiting Provence. City is big enough to have a TGV station and regular rail, bus service, yet small enough and steeped with history and beautiful architecture. Best to go in early Autumn or early Spring when there are mostly locals around. I'll definitely go back

The palace of Avignon was the summer home to the popes and they used to have over 100 people for cooking, cleaning and serving.
