Brooklyn Heights was one--perhaps the--first "suburb" in America, the product of a reliable ferry service that developed in the early 19th century between Wall Street in Manhattan and the Fulton ferry landing in Brooklyn. Many buildings built before 1850, and a handful built before 1830, still survive. These three Federal Style brick row houses in the Heights are considered to be the best preserved examples of this style in America.
