www.romanlife-romeitaly.com Inside the Pantheon and then walking out viewing the massive columns and the square outside the Pantheon (Piazza della Rotonda). The word Pantheon comes from the Greek words "pan" - everything - and "theon" - divine. Built by Emperor Hadrian, it was the first temple for the common people. Up until that time only priests were allowed into places of worship. The Pantheon is in remarkable condition considering it's over 2000 years old and certainly Rome's oldest best kept monument. Did you know the dome's hole is 9m in diameter, and contrary to some religious tales, the rain does penetrate through the hole. In fact there is a drain in the marble floor directly beneath the opening in the dome. www.romanlife-romeitaly.com
