This film is wildly misleading!!Rock and Roll is certainaly not just getting started in China!!! I have been living in China for 1 year and have spend 6 months reasearching and shooting a documantary on the Chinese Punk rock scene in Wuhan. Punk rock kicked off in China in the mid 90's and Wuhan bands actively toured the country. Resulting punk bands emerged from Changsha, Nanjing and all over China. Before that the rebellious prison songs of the late 80s kick started Chinese rock. This video is typical evidence of western preconceptions of china and poor reporting is evident throughout it, one should particularly note that the interviewer continues to try and put words into the mouth of one of the guys he is interviewing in this part and in part 2 I am particularly shocked by one of the gig organizers insistance that "we have to show them." Chinese are quite capable of doing these kind of events themselves and have been doing it for years all over China. I should point out I have only been to Qingdoa once and haven't explored the music scene there but it certainly cannot be used as a reference point for the whole of China.
In 2003 China puts a man in space. In 2009 rock and roll emerges. How did the 1960s take 40 years longer to reach China?

When visiting China don't forget to look into the emerging underground rock scene. Guns'n Roses step aside. While there may not be any "Chinese Democracy" in the Middle Kingdom (the album has been banned in China), there definitely is some rock and roll. But, the scene is just getting started. Here's an up close look at what happens when rock and roll and communism meet.
