The grave of blues music icon Blind Lemon Jefferson sits in the black cemetery of Wortham, Texas. Compare this part of the cemetery with the white cemetery, and you'll see how segregation and racism followed African-Americans even beyond death. One of Blind Lemon's more famous songs is "See That My Grave is Kept Clean," which Robert Johnson and myriad other bluesmen since have recorded. After we shut the camera off, we made sure we left Mr. Jefferson's plot looking a lot better and less-weed-choked than we found it.
