Purana Qila in Old Delhi was built during the rule of Sher Shah (1538-1545), an Afghan invader who briefly interrupted Mughal rule of India. It's mostly a large open space of landscaped lawns, but it contains Sher Shah's mosque and a red octagonal tower (the Sher Mandal), later used by Humayun as his library, and believed to be the site of his death.
