A grand tomb for a grand emperor, the man who put Innsbruck on the map. Emperor Maximilian the 1st, was not a humble guy. I guess he shouldn't be since, as one of Austria's famous Hapsburgs, he expanded the Hapsburg dynasty to reach the furthest lands to date, even having control of Spain. He was often depicted as having a large nose, and an obsession with his legacy. He made sure to have his wildly grandiose tomb created before he died. It features life size statues of all his friends and family standing over him, each bearing their actual death mask. His tomb is located in the Hofkirche, a church just outside the Alstadt (old town) of Innsbruck. Not only is the tomb remarkable, the modern exhibit leading up the tomb is well worth it for the experience--trust me you'll be surprised--I sure was. There's also a country museum attached, that shows how many of the local Austrian's used to live in the rural countryside.
