Apparently it all started a thousand years ago when an opera group from China travelled to Phuket, Thailand for a show. They became sick, and the locals suggested to wear white and eat vegetarian food as a remedy. It worked, and that's how the festival started. How it cascaded into a pain tolerance festival, I don't know, nor could I find much solid information on it. It seems the local Chinese are the ones who take part in the sacred rituals and it's said they do it to be blessed with good fortune. I'll take their word for it... Icon from Iconscollection.com
