Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido is sparsely populated with laid-back rural charms. Its capital, Sapporo, is known for is winter festival which is also time for those with seafood cravings. Active volcanoes create giant lakes as late as 1977 when Lake Toya was formed from eruption at Mount Usu.
