Ottawa is the capital of Canada, within the province of Ontario. In 1857, Queen Victoria was asked to choose a common capital for the Province of Canada and chose Ottawa. The Parliament's construction began in 1859. The city of Ottawa had a population of nearly a million, making it the fourth-largest municipality in the country.
