We had a very profound, spiritual experience in the Sahara thanks to the loving people we met there and the awe inspiring, simple beauty. Our daughter Mozart, who was just 6, rode in on a camel and gave a violin concert to 60 welcoming young Berber children which was a highlight for us and we shared some of that in our video "Where in Heaven is Mozart?". We bought some healthy food for them afterwards and Mozart had a great time playing with them despite the language differences. We were greeted with sunshine and a very rare, magical rainbow as we headed into the dazzling Merzouga dunes for our private camel trek and overnight in a nomad tent under the stars in the Sahara. We were honored to get to visit with some of the nomad families and get a taste of their graciousness, good food and hospitality. We owe a special thanks to Allesandra & Hmad of Les Nomades who are amazing people who helped us create this special life changing and authentic experience. Soultravelers3 Chocolate Love in Koeln!

We had a fabulous time exploring this famous Chocolate Museum on the Rhine in Koeln/Colgne, Germany! Mmm you could smell the chocolate as soon as you got close to Schokoladenmuseum! They also give you lots of free samples and they have a huge fountain of chocolate and a glass elevator. We missed the Cadbury factory when in the UK, so promised Mozart we would go to this Lindt factory. It's actually a great home school field trip because it's a complete history through the world of chocolate production starting from the bean! Now this is a fun way to learn and we munched our way as we learned and enjoyed. There was even a fun digital test in the end to see if we were paying attention. We passed with flying colors! We had a great time in the nearby cathedral and visiting the whole city, but this was our favorite spot! Soultravelers3-Venice Via Kid's Books!

We love the idea of making up kids itineraries from good children's literature! I think it helps ground the experience in a deeper way when you use books with kids or adults. Mozart really enjoyed both these books, so we used them to create some of our itineraries while in Venice. We went to Piazza San Marco and fed the pigeons, saw the Ca'd'Oro (house of gold), went to the the famous Rialto bridge on the Grand Canal and more.... just like Zoe Sophia ( the 10 year old protagonist in the book). Mozart also wanted to see if we could find the exact place where Zoe Sophia had a wonderful cup of hot chocolate. One of her favorite Paris adventures was finding Angelina's where Linnea had special hot chocolate, so we hoped for another exciting find. Caffe Florian on the Piazza was found in a covered area near to the Basilica, but hidden behind the orchestra. According to the book, "Venetians have come to Florian's since 1720" and there certainly was magic there the day we came. As you can see in the picture we found the exact same spot where Zoe Sophia and her aunt D.P. had their very special hot chocolate and we did it too! Like Angelina's, it is a pricey place to have hot chocolate, but a splurge well worth it as every time she looks at the book, she remembers her shared experience. Books help kids make it their own and we have loved using them on our world tour! Mozart was a voracious reader long before we left, which does help, but even for a child who is not reading yet, books can help when preparing for travel and as an aid in keeping it more alive after one returns. Hunting this famous location down and enjoying this enchanting experience was a treat for all of us as the small orchestra played on this beautiful day in Piazza San Marco. Another fun coincidence for us was that both the violin and piano players were woman. Mozart really related to the beautiful blond violinist and she went over to talk to her with her own violin in hand, as earlier she played on the gondola which was a thrill she will never forget. This is the first in our Soultravelers3 series about touring great wine regions of the world! Late this past fall of 2008, we arrived in Colmar, France and the many beautiful ancient wine villages along the Alsace route des Vins. Our 7 year old "Mozart" who has been visiting vineyards since she helped put a small Pinot Noir one in with her daddy at 5 months old in California, loved picking these very sweet grapes. We did not know then that she would be spending her childhood running through famous vineyards around the world! The autumn colors were as beautiful as any painting and surprisingly there were very few tourists around. We had just left behind the Romantic Road in Germany and were delighted to discover this area of France ( near both Switzerland and Germany borders) which has a unique heritage making a German/French mix. The stunning wine road winds it's way through 170 kms of vineyards, medieval castles, Vosges forests, Romanesque churches and picturesque villages. We were based at a campground in Colmar which is known for it's historic beauty, gourmet foods and hospitality. What fun to explore their "little Venice" and do some wine tasting, shopping & museum exploring as we walked about. The wines of Alsace are always presented in a tall slender bottle and come from 7 grape varieties: Sylvaner ,Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Muscat d'Alsace, Tokay Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer. One does not tend to think of pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela as "family travel",especially with a young child, but it was an extraordinary way to experience it together that I can highly recommend. Seeing things through a child's eyes opened my heart in ways that I would have missed if we did it alone. We too, feel like pilgrims in our own way, as a family can not take a world touring journey like ours without great dedication and trust or without learning more about ones soul. The energy is very special in Santiago de Compostela, perhaps because so many have been so happy and grateful when they arrived.We felt a wonderful mix of blissful joy, gratitude and sacredness. Internationally bestselling author Paul Coehlo said: "My turning point was my pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. It was then that I, who had dedicated most of my life to penetrate the 'secrets' of the universe, realized that there are no secrets. Life is and will always be a mystery . Life is a constant miracle, and this miracle manifests itself in encounters with other people. After the pilgrimage, I simplified my spiritual search a lot, and instead of searching for answers, I started to understand that life itself is an answer." We will always cherish our family pilgrimage to Santiago and Galicia...beautiful Celtic Spain. Mozart was 7 & quickly drew the picture of the little pilgrim on a napkin when we were not looking, while waiting for a meal. She is dressed in the brown cape and hat that is the traditional dress of a pilgrim from the middle ages to experience what that might have been like.
